Beyond Getting Warm: Other Signs Your Fridge Needs Repair

About Me
Servicing a Beloved Appliance

After marrying my adorable husband over 13 years ago, I moved into a house he already lived in. Because I didn’t like the small, outdated refrigerator my spouse owned, I convinced him to buy a new one. After shopping at a few retailers, we purchased a gorgeous stainless steel refrigerator. Unfortunately, our refrigerator’s freezer started producing excessive amounts of ice not long after we bought our appliance. We immediately called a service technician to check out our problem. After only a few minutes of investigating the issue, this skilled technician identified our problem and quickly fixed it. On this blog, I hope you will discover the benefits of contacting a service technician immediately after noticing a malfunction with one of your appliances.

How is your refrigerator working? If it is cold inside, it's easy to assume everything is fine and your refrigerator is working well. This may, indeed, be the case. But sometimes, fridge problems don't stop the refrigerator from cooling, at least not in its early stages. It's important that you're able to recognize early signs that your fridge needs repairs so you can address them before your food starts getting warm.

Peeling or Loose Gaskets

The gaskets are those flexible, rubbery tubes that run along the sides, top, and bottom of your fridge door. Take a look at them, and use your finger to move them around a little. If the gaskets are really loose, coming unattached, or torn, you need to have them replaced or repaired by a refrigerator repair team. Damaged gaskets cause a fridge to leak cold air. It may still stay cool, but it will use extra energy to do so. This is a pretty simple and inexpensive repair for a fridge repair person to make, and it will save you money on electricity down the road.

Loud Noises

Does your fridge make a tapping, banging, or rumbling noise while it is cooling? There is likely something wrong with the fan that blows the cold air into the fridge. There could be a loose bolt or screw causing the fan to hit its casing when it moves. Or, the fan may have lost a blade. A repair person can come tighten all of the connections. If needed, they can even replace the entire fan unit, although this is a larger repair and is not always worth making if you have a larger fridge.

Strange Odors

When you open your fridge, do you notice a strange odor? Your first step should be to clean the fridge out, dispose of any old food, and then put a tub of baking soda in the fridge to absorb the odors. If that does not work, then you may have some mold growing in the back of the fridge or in the ice dispenser. Or, some liquid may have leaked into the fan chamber. A repair person can take the fridge's basic components apart, clean everything out, and restore your fridge's fresh, original scent.

Just because your fridge is still cool does not mean it's working entirely as it should. Keep your eyes out for these other signs that it needs repairs.
